Ever wished your workout felt more like a party? (Haven’t we all!) Ever wished your workout felt more like a party? (Haven’t we all!) Well,  get ready because today we’re talking with Robbie Ann Darby, an actress, dancer, and fitness expert who hosts a series of RAD fitness events where, as she puts it, “event planning meets fitness.”

However, her personal journey has had its rough moments beginning with an eating disorder which began between middle school and high school. The pressure to stay thin and popular, as well as Robbie’s admitted perfectionism, created the perfect storm for disordered eating that lasted well into grad school. She’s vocal about her struggle as well as her recovery in the hopes that she can help others face their issues in a more positive way.

After years of therapy, Robbie now serves as a role model for women, and especially women of color, who are struggling with their own food and self-image issues. The L.A.-based actress/model/fitness instructor is passionate about this mission, but she also gets pretty darn excited about the best mascara and lip stains to last through a workout session. Plus, in this fun ep, she also talks about filling her wardrobe with colorful athletic gear — years in New York City created an almost all-black wardrobe that needed some sprucing up!

Speaking of athletic gear …

Did you know that FBG now has a pair of exclusive leggings made by Four Athletics? They’re available for purchase now (and they are so cute and they have amazing pockets) — but only until April 25. So! Be sure to grab a pair (you can get them right here) while they’re still available!

Our favorite RAD quote from the interview …

Podcast Ep 78 Highlights With Robbie Ann Darby

  • How eating disorders are not just a “white girl’s disease”
  • The origin of her eating disorder and how it cropped up again while she was in grad school
  • How hard it is for women of color to talk about body image and depression
  • Her journey from being a gawky, awkward preteen to a popular high school student — and how that messed with her sense of self
  • How most films that cover the subject of eating disorders do a disservice to their audience
  • Her favorite beauty products and why she loves to look glam while getting in a sweat session
  • The differences between New York and Los Angeles in fashion and fitness (plus the secret way all of those celebrities really get to those award shows!)
  • Plus, the FBGs are super excited about our new pair of leggings created especially for us and our followers by Four Athletics.

Let’s get to talking about a part of our body that is often neglected — our glutes! Courtney Wyckoff of Momma Strong is supercharged about women firing up their entire glutes (especially that gluteus medius) in this fun, chatty and oh-so-i nformative episode.

Courtney began her journey after giving birth to her second child. During that time, she experienced depression while struggling to get her body back in shape despite her background in Pilates and personal training. It was then that she turned to exercises focusing on extension versus flexion — and that brought her the “aha moment” that changed her entire workout focus. (She is seriously all about the glutes, folks!)

With research, she discovered that it’s the glute supporting the pelvis that’s the key to core health — instead of abdominal work only. So get ready to rock out those squats and planks, people! Honestly, even if you have no interest in giving birth, the advice she gives in this episode is going to change how you work out from now on!

Here are a few of our fave quotes …

Podcast Episode 77 Highlights With Courtney Wyckoff

  • How strengthening your core is about more than doing crunches
  • Why she decided to work in the pre- and postnatal fitness field and what has changed in that category over the years
  • How to tell if you have “dead butt syndrome”
  • How to do a potty squat (video on how to do it, here!)
  • The idea of a woman’s body as a “container” and how to best maintain it
  • Her version of a 2018 kegel (brace those abs!)
  • Defining diastasis recti, plus what can be done about it after giving birth
  • Her personal glute routine she performs twice each day
  • What she means by saying glutes are the “surfers” of the muscle groups
  • Why motherhood is an “action sport”
  • Her plans for her upcoming Cheeky Tour
  • How to hold a baby the right way (it’s different than you think!)
  • Her thoughts on waist training, postpartum braces and wrapping
  • The kinetics of the perfect plank position
  • Her top advice for avoiding injuries
  • Plus, we FBGs talk about our favorite glute moves — and Kristen puts Margo and Jenn to shame!

Excelling in roles as varied as the chilly Lara Axelrod on Showtime’s Billions to the hilarious Dr. Valerie Flame on Comedy Central’s Children’s Hospital, Malin Akerman might be most famous for her badassery as Silk Spectre in 2009’s Watchman, which required her to get in the best shape of her life by working out with a hardcore former Navy SEAL! We had an easy and breezy chat with the super down-to-earth mom about her favorite health and beauty tips, plus how she’s finding the time to plan her upcoming wedding to actor Jack Donnelly.

Swedish born, Toronto-raised Malin grew up with a health-conscious mom who ran a health food store and gave her inside information on good nutrition at a young age. Malin began her career as a teen model where she experienced many of the pitfalls of dealing with intense scrutiny about her looks and body. These days she is more interested in having the energy to play with her son than starving herself to fit into samples sizes — and she has plenty of advice on how to achieve Hollywood-level glamor with ease in this really fun ep. Enjoy!

Our fave quotes from Malin include …

Podcast Episode 65 Highlights With Malin Akerman

  • Her unique health conscious childhood and the “green” yogurt her mom made for her
  • The workouts she does now, plus how training for a role is different than training for life
  • Her best tips for looking fresh after a sweat session at the gym
  • Her easy-to-follow healthy beauty routines
  • Her past life as a model and how this affected her body image (as well as her shift in thinking since then)
  • The adorable song she listens to with her son Sebastian every morning to start their day

In this episode we speak to an actual food scientist: Stuart “Dr. Stu” Farrimond, author of The Science of Cooking: Every Question Answered to Perfect Your Cooking. He offers his best tips and advice for how handle all of your cooking and food prep — based on science. Wondering how to know which knives are worth the investment? Hoping to cook a juicy turkey? Not sure if your eggs are fresh? We break all that down — and plenty more!

Dr. Stu’s path to writing a book about food and cooking was an unusual one, to say the least. He started as a medical doctor, but after he was diagnosed with a brain tumor and developed epilepsy, he was forced to leave what he thought was his life’s passion. The medical world’s loss became the teaching world’s gain as he discovered his knack for explaining tricky scientific ideas with non-jargony talk. From there he fell into his niche of food science research (including finding the best biscuit to dunk in a cup of tea!), which led to the book he is so proud of today.

Also, don’t forget to give our podcast sponsor VARIDESK some love by checking out their active workspace products. We love them and think you will, too!

  • The best knives every cook should have on hand
  • Why he cooks pasta without oil in the water
  • The real benefits of shopping organically and buying locally sourced foods
  • The science behind why some flavors work well with others — and why some don’t
  • Margo’s favorite recipe for the Perfect Eye of Round Roast
  • How to cool down your mouth when you eat something super spicy
  • Tips for cooking holiday meat, like this citrus turkey brine (a favorite at Kristen’s Thanksgiving table every year)
  • Jenn’s obsession with sheet pan dinners and Ted Allen’s yummy kale salad recipe

Have you ever looked at your life and realized you need to make some adjustments to make yourself happier and healthier? Ruari Fairbairns did, and in his case, that adjustment came in the form of giving up drinking alcohol for two years in the face of incredible peer pressure — and thinking he would lose his edge as one of the top brokers in the world. However, he soon realized that his fears were unfounded — and learned some other important life lessons to boot. Spurred by this life-changing experience, he and Andy Ramage, another broker, created the One Year No Beer (OYNB) program, which aims to help people rethink their relationship with alcohol and consider how their own lives, bodies, and health might change if they abstained for a month, six months, a year — or more.

And that’s what this week’s podcast ep is all about.

This episode (and the purpose of OYNB) is not about how to recognize if you have a true alcohol addiction. (Please speak to your doctor, therapist, or a trusted friend or family memeber if you have concerns about that.) Rather, it’s about learning to socialize without imbibing. Ruari offers suggestions on how to make abstaining fun and successful. He also clues us in on the kinds of people who join the challenge (16,000 strong around the world!) and his favorite OYNB success stories.

Some of our favorite quotes from this episode include …

Podcast Episode 54 Highlights With Ruari Fairbairns

  • The benefits for both mind and body when taking a break from alcohol
  • How to handle peer pressure, especially when faced with situations that usually consist of some form of drinking alcohol
  • Tips for setting yourself up for success (including “stealth drinking” — which isn’t what you think!)
  • The surprisingly tough part of giving up alcohol and facing your more authentic self
  • Why a fitness challenge is a huge help for those doing OYNB
  • Looking at the cessation of drinking as a challenge rather than something scary
  • What we can expect from his upcoming book, The 28-Day Alcohol-Free Challenge
